The Treasure We Have Found

“The farmer sells everything he owns and buys the field.” In the Gospel reading of this Sunday, Jesus is calling on us to look at our priorities and set them straight. And that’s easier said than done! How do we know what our priorities are? The first test is what we spend our time at. If, for example, a couple want to make their marriage a priority, each one must be willing to invest time in their relationship. This time needs to be regular, good, creative time. Many couples do not give that time to each other. The same is true of family life. Time is the first and greatest gift of parents to their children. The second test of priorities is what we are passionate about. There are many sports widows in our country because this is what so many men are passionate about rather than their sacred commitments to marriage and family life. We can also look at this in relation to our faith commitment and the time and energy we give to those with whom we worship God.

Fr. Johnny Doherty, C.Ss.R.

The Long Tower One Hundred is a monster draw to raise funds for the Centenary of the Long Tower Church, built in 1909. In 2009 the Long Tower Church is 100 years old therefore we wish to sell 2009 tickets at a £100 subscription each. There are 39 prizes (£20,000 plus 2 cars plus 36 great cash prizes). There will be no more than 2009 tickets sold, giving each member almost a one in 50 chance of winning a prize! In addition, each promoter will have almost a one in 40 chance of winning a prize!

The committee is calling for your collective support and collecting ability to be put into generous action over the next number of months. We need members to buy tickets and we need promoters to sell tickets. There will be ten promoters’ prizes. DO YOU KNOW what age Our Lady’s Grotto in Lecky Road is? We would like to find out what year it was built. Local memory puts it in the later 1940s but it would be helpful to have an exact date. Can anyone tell us where it is recorded or if there is any written record of it? Perhaps someone would be kind enough to do some newspaper research to ascertain dates or even locate dated photographs. Thank you.

PLEASE PRAY for all the couples getting married this year. They are in preparation for a God-given vocation and need God’s help to prepare well and sustain the commitment they are making. Congratulations to those who have already celebrated the sacrament.
