Sunday 30th November 2008

1st Sunday of Advent

Waiting for God

Jesus said to his disciples: "What I say to you I say to all: Stay awake!" Three times in the Gospel reading for the First Sunday of Advent, Jesus gives the command to stay awake - so it must be important! But what does it mean for us? This week we begin a new year in our journey of faith and the danger is that it might simply be the same as the one we are ending. We are no further along the road unless we brighten up. The same is true in your journey of love. One year can easily be the same as the last one and when it is like that you are asleep or half dead. This week is another wake up call for all of us whether we are married or single, priest or religious, living in a family or living alone. It is particularly a call to every parish community to make the year ahead a time of growth to the glory of God.

Fr. Johnny Doherty, C.Ss.R.

Each day Fr Colhoun and Fr Mongan will pray the Divine Office for the families who are able to make this commitment. If you would like to write your family name (address not necessary) on the page at the church doors the priests will put your intentions before God each morning of Advent. THE OPUS SECTILE HAS GONE FOR REPAIR

These are the three grand panels behind the high altar – Perugino’s “Ascension of Christ” flanked by St Peter and St Paul. We have successfully dismantled the masterpiece for its restoration and preservation. The experts say they know of no other opus like this one. They consider it unique. We are fortunate that despite the delicate task in hand not a single item got damaged. The complete structure has now gone to Belfast for repair. And as you can see, three photographic replicas have been put in place so as not to take from the aesthetics of the church. The project will cost over £20,000 to complete. Thank you for your generosity in supporting such necessary repairs and for your patience as they happen.

The calendar contains a unique collection of rarely seen photographs, covering the history of the Long Tower Church from the early 1800s to the present day. This calendar will make a unique gift and also become a collector’s item. Price £6.99. The committee would like to thank all those who supplied photographs for this and for further publications.
