Sunday 29th July 2007

Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Reflection - The Lord's Prayer

The ‘Our Father’ is the first and greatest of all Christian prayers. Its short and simple phrases embrace every relation between us and God. It not only tells us what to pray for, but also how to pray for it. However, it tends to be said so hurriedly that much of its meaning is lost. This is a pity. Because, properly understood, the ‘Our Father’ contains a whole programme for Christian living. If we were to live up to what it contains, we would be perfectly in tune with the mind of Christ, because undoubtedly this is how he himself prayed and lived.
The first part deals with God. We begin by acknowledging God’s existence, and calling him ‘Father’.

The second part deals with us and our needs. We begin by praying for our daily bread. ‘Bread’ stands for all our material needs. All we really need, however, is enough for today.

The whole of the ‘Our Father’ is couched in plural terms. This shows that we are one family under God, and that there can be no salvation for us independent of others.

25TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE CARMELITES IN TERMONBACCA
You are invited to a Mass of thanksgiving to honour the silver jubilee of the Carmelite Fathers coming to Derry. It will be celebrated today, Sunday, in Long Tower at 4 o’clock. The Bishops of the diocese and many Carmelites priests will be in attendance to honour the sterling work done in Termonbacca down the years.

On the 9th June it was exactly 25 years since the foundation of the Carmelites in Derry. We celebrate this quarter century with gratitude for the spiritual presence of the Carmelite Community among us and the untiring service they have provided to the city and diocese. Since Termonbacca itself is geographically part of Long Tower Parish we are delighted to host the Carmelite Fathers this afternoon. Refreshments afterwards in Termonbacca. All welcome!

THE PARISH PILGRIMAGE TO ROME is “in full flight”. We wish Monsignor McCanny and our parishioners a most fulfilling week. They return home on Friday (3 August). Buon viaggio!

PLEASE PRAY for all the couples getting married this year. They are in preparation for a God-given vocation and need God’s help to prepare well and sustain the commitment they are making. Congratulations to those who have already celebrated the sacrament. P.S. A woman told her husband that he could buy her any gift so long as it contained diamonds. So he bought her a pack of cards!
