Sunday 29th March 2009

5th Sunday of Lent

Our forgiving God

“Anyone who loves her/his life loses it; anyone who hates her/his life in this world will keep it for the eternal life.” At first glance that statement from Christ in this Sunday’s Gospel is hard to take. But it is God’s wisdom and we must listen to it. It’s really about our priorities. If our priorities are all just about the here and now and our own gratification we will lose everything. If we set our sights on what God wants for us we will gain far more than we ever imagined possible. And what God wants for us is love, peace, joy, freedom, full life - all of which can only be gained by giving ourselves fully to one another. Marriage and family life are the two great schools for learning self-giving. In marriage each person has to deliberately choose what is good and best for their life together. In family life parents especially have to constantly give of themselves. That is how people grow to maturity.

Selling Prints of the Opus Sectile

We recently unveiled the restored opus sectile in Long Tower. The experts say this is a masterpiece, an extremely rare work of art. Pictures of these three grand panels behind the high altar – the Ascension of Christ flanked by St Peter and St Paul – are now on sale.
The restoration project is costing over £20,000. To help us fund the restoration we are selling prints. The mounted pictures are available for purchase from the Long Tower Church and the Parochial House.

Cost: A3 for £19.95 or A1 for £45.

You might consider it to be your own memento of the 100th year of Long Tower. The proceeds go towards the cost of the repairs and the general restoration of the Long Tower.
We would also encourage you to purchase on the grounds of supporting local commerce. Several local businesses are involved in the production of the prints and that gives an additional reason to support the project. It keeps local people at work while it assists the restoration in Long Tower.

LENTEN DEVOTIONS take place today, Sunday at 6.00pm. All welcome.

YOU DON’T BRING ME FLOWERS

In keeping with the penitential character of Lent, flowers are not usually placed in the Church during this season. Accordingly, we would ask you to postpone the donation of flowers until the great season of Easter.

THE BAPTISTERY GATES have been restored and were unveiled during the week. THE COLLECTION DAY FOR THE ANGELS was a great success. We wish to thank all those who contributed to restore the angels to the roof of the church. Sincere thanks are due to all those who did the collecting itself on the streets last Saturday. We owe a depth of gratitude to the members of Cursillo, the Knights of the Blessed Sacrament, COR Youth Group, Youth 25 and the students from the various schools who persevered in the chilly air all day. The total raised was £4,140.47 and €608.66. Well done!

SEALING OF PORCHES FROM RAIN – Each of the porches is taking in rain-water. The effect is that the paint is coming off and the plaster then disintegrates. There is some damage to the ceilings also, especially in the stairwells at the main door. We have made several attempts to repair the plaster over the years but the problem persists. Therefore, over the next number of weeks we will be repairing the roofs of the porches, one at a time. We apologise for the scaffolding. The western gable and copings are now complete and water-tight. Thank you for your generosity and patience.
