ROSARY FOR PROTECTION
The Rosary is the Gospel on its knees, a meditation
on the Mysteries of the life of Christ through the
eyes of Our Lady. In its present form it dates from
the 12th century. St Dominic (1170-1221) found that
by reciting ten Hail Marys after each sermon, he managed
to overcome heresy and accomplish what other preachers
had been unable to do through argument.
In 1571 Pope Pius V instituted the Feast of Our Lady
of the Rosary (7th October) after the Christians defeated
the Turks at Lepanto by praying the Rosary and saving
Christendom from takeover.
In each of the Marian apparitions, Our Lady asked
for the daily Rosary to bring peace to the heart and
protection from evil. The world sometimes thinks evil
is not real. However, having had a vision of the Devil
in 1890, Pope Leo XIII composed the prayer to St Michael
and asked that it be recited after Masses throughout
the world for protection from Satan.
Today our beloved city is beset with many social
difficulties. Much of this turmoil is evil from which
we need protection. The sense of worry, particularly
about suicide, means there is an extra need for community
prayer at this time. As Christ said, ‘Where
two or three are gathered in my name, I am there.’
At the heart of every mother’s love is the
protection of her children. Our heavenly Mother Mary,
in Her desire to protect us, has given us the gift
of the Rosary. ‘One day through the Scapular
and the Rosary I will save the world’, Our Lady
promised St Dominic. She has given us the Rosary as
a weapon to defeat evil and as a gift to console us
in this valley of tears.
In an effort to protect ourselves from evil we like
to request Our Lady’s assistance. This is the
reason we recite the Rosary as a community before
each Mass. As God’s family on our knees we are
begging Our Lady’s help for grace and protection
for our homes and families. We trust Her to intercede
for us and bring us healing from heaven. Our Lady,
Queen of the most holy Rosary, pray for us.
