Sunday 25th January

3rd Sunday of the Year

The Ways of the Lord.

“Follow me and I will make you into fishers of people.” Those words of Jesus, which are given to us for this week, are usually thought of as being addressed to people with a vocation to the priesthood or religious life. They are about vocation certainly but are addressed to each of us. The four great vocations in the Church are single life, married life, religious life and priesthood. All of us who are baptised are living one of those and each of us is vital to the health of the whole body, the Church. We live our vocations in different ways but to the same end, the salvation of the world. Our task is to discover how to live our own vocation to the full. This means discovering how to make our love radiate out to those around us. We begin in our homes with those who are closest to us. Then we can reach out to the world around us. When we are with Christ and following him love will be the characteristic of our lives.

Fr. Johnny Doherty, C.Ss.R.

VISITATION TEAM 2009 – We hope to establish a team of parishioners who will take part in an outreach programme for the centenary. The goal is to prepare a group of twelve “disciples” who will dedicate one night a week for twelve weeks to knock on doors and invite people to come to Mass. We will have a few preparatory sessions so that you know what to say and do and then we will commission the team. Exciting! Could you offer yourself to serve God for this targeted project? We will be recruiting very soon.

FIFTY-SIXTH WORLD LEPROSY DAY – SUNDAY 25TH JANUARY The annual celebration of the ‘World Leprosy Day’ is a great appointment of solidarity with our brothers and sisters who are afflicted by Hansen’s disease that is often ignored by the mass media but which still today strikes each year over 250,000 people, most of whom live in conditions of poverty. According to the most recent calculations of the World Health Organisation, which refer to the year 2007, in that year there were 254,525 new leprosy cases, with 212,802 people already being treated for it. It is good and comforting to observe that in this struggle against Hansen’s disease, non-governmental associations and organisations are present that go beyond religious, ideological and cultural affiliations, all of which meet each other in the common goal of bringing to those who are sick the opportunity of regaining a state of social, health-care, and spiritual wellbeing.
