The Ascension of Christ into Heaven

Jesus said to his disciples: "Go out to the whole world; proclaim the Good News to all creation". Because of all that has been happening in the Church in recent years we can feel despondent about the future. Today's feast of joy and gladness is a call to us to look up with confidence and know the power of Christ for the world in which we live. In spite of the sinfulness of his people, Christ is at work and can overcome. Our task is to let the world know his love and his salvation, not just by word but especially by the way we live with joy and hope and love. Although these qualities are best developed in our homes and families, they need to be seen and experienced in our parish community. This can only happen when we are all taking our responsibility for the health and well-being of our parish and its future.

Fr. Johnny Doherty, C.Ss.R.

SATURDAY IS THE 100TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE OFFICIAL OPENING OF LONG TOWER CHURCH. Although our Centenary Mass with the Papal Legate will take place on the 9th of June, Feast of St Columba, this present church opened its doors for the first time on 30th May 1909. Pentecost Sunday fell on that date and it was chosen as the ideal day to open the new church. To celebrate the actual anniversary please note that the 8 o’clock Mass will be offered in Latin. It will be the Mass of the Holy Spirit, the same Mass that was offered in Latin on that day 100 years ago in our beautiful church for the first time. Please note also that there will NOT be 10 o’clock Mass in Long Tower that (Saturday) morning, 30 May, on account of the First Holy Communion at 11am.

THE CENTENARY MASS WITH THE PAPAL LEGATE will be open to all on Tuesday 9th June at 7.30pm, Feast of St Columba. We extend a general invitation to our parishioners and friends. It will be necessary to reserve a limited number of seats for invited guests. The remainder of the seats will be available for anyone else who would like to attend. This should extend to about 1500 seats which will be there for the taking – and the praying! Come early to be sure of a seat!

THE ANNUAL CORPUS CHRISTI PROCESSION will take place from the Grotto in the Brandywell next Sunday 31st May. The Angelus and Exposition will be followed by the procession with the Blessed Sacrament from the Grotto to Long Tower Church. The ceremony will conclude with Benediction in the church at 6pm. All welcome! We especially invite the First Holy Communion children to dress up and walk with the Blessed Sacrament.

TROUBLE HAS FLARED UP once again at the boundary of the Fountain and Bishop Street. The street was strewn with debris several times during past the week. This has happened many times before but it is unfortunate and terribly inconvenient to meet it again. We appeal first of all to parents to assume full responsibility for their children. If you are a parent you have a duty to know where your children are, who they are with and what they are doing. No one else can do this God-given task for you. If you do your very best to make your home a prayerful, peaceful and fruitful place the children are more likely to use their time productively. We appeal secondly to the community to work together in your own streets to ensure that young people do not feel the freedom to throw stones. Vandalism is not entertainment and benefits no one. Worse again, some of the youths will end up with this blemish on their record and they do not need that as they start out in life. Please pray for families, for happy homes, and peaceful streets.
