Do not be afraid

Jesus said: “Do not be afraid.” In the Scriptures, fear is identified as the single greatest enemy of life and love. That statement “do not be afraid” is spoken 365 times in the Scriptures. The greatest fear that grips people is of what it is going to cost to really believe, to love, to enjoy. Fear of the cost can make us set limits to our love. And fear can make us set limits to our willingness to let God into our lives. As always, we need to think about this word of Christ in terms of the relationships of our lives and our faith. In every community very many people don’t get involved in anything other than the minimum. This doesn’t mean that these people are bad natured but it is mostly because of this fear. Men particularly are afraid of developing the intimate relationships of marriage and family life for the same reason – they are afraid of the cost to themselves and they miss out on the rewards. Listen to Christ’s word this week.

Fr. Johnny Doherty, C.Ss.R.

CEMETERY SUNDAY

The Annual Service of Intercession for the Dead takes place in the City Cemetery on Sunday, 22nd June at 6.00 pm.

Due to the fact that there are fewer priests available in the City, people are asked to bring their own holy water with them to the Cemetery for the blessing of the graves.

At the appropriate time the Bishop will ask a representative of each family to sprinkle their family grave (and neighbouring grave if there is no-one present). There will be no holy water in the Cemetery so please ensure that you bring your own holy water.

To facilitate this we will bless water at each Mass in Long Tower next Saturday evening and Sunday. If you would like to bring a bottle of water to be bless at mass it will ease the queue at the holy water barrel.

GOLDEN JUBILEE OF PRIESTHOOD

1958 – 22nd June – 2008

Fr James Hamilton

Exactly fifty years ago today Fr Jim Hamilton was ordained to the priesthood in All Hallows College, Dublin. In thanksgiving for the gift of priesthood and in honour of Christ the High Priest, Fr Jim is celebrating the 12 noon Mass in Long Tower today. In this church he was baptised and initiated to the family of God. From this church he went forth to study for the priesthood. To this church he came home to celebrate Mass after Ordination. And with the people of this church he has offered the Eucharist countless times. In the half-century since Ordination Fr Jim has served the People of God tirelessly and generously in the United States. We are abundantly grateful to him for his shining example and we express our warmest appreciation to him on this his day of Golden Jubilee.

As his own Bishop said to him recently “On behalf of all the clergy and laity of the diocese of Corpus Christi, I offer you my deepest thanks for being a humble servant of the Lord and for sharing your many talents and gifts with the people of the Church in South Texas. I thank you especially for your continued service since your retirement. Truly you are a blessing to us all.” Ad multos annos!

THANKS AND FAREWELL to Mr Patsy McCloskey. Mr McCloskey has been teaching in Long Tower Primary School for 36 years. He came here as a newly-trained teacher in 1972 and has been Vice-Principal since 1988. It was in that year that the amalgamation of the two schools took place – St Columba’s Boys and St Columba’s Girls. We are extremely grateful to Mr McCloskey for his years of dedication and tireless pedagogy to the children of our school. A native of Dungiven he has travelled day after day to share his cheerful, upbeat zeal for intelligent learning with the youngest members of our community. This enthusiasm for Catholic education is his trademark and he communicated it with fairness, good humour and constant prayer. We praise him, we thank him and we wish him God’s finest blessings in his retirement. “And still they gazed, and still the wonder grew, that one small head could carry all he knew.” (Oliver Goldsmith, The Deserted Village).

THE BINGO HAS MOVED from St Eugene’s Parish Hall to St Mary’s Parish Hall. We play every Sunday night and every Tuesday night in St Mary’s, Creggan. Thank you very much for your generous support. It is a valuable source of income for the parish. Please invite your friends. Newcomers welcome!

CONGRATULATIONS to the boys and girls of Primary 4 who recently received the Eucharist, their third Sacrament. May they always stay close to Jesus and may God bless them on their journey of faith. This week the children of Long Tower P4 donated a sum of their money to The Pontifical Society of Missionary Children to help children in Uganda. We thank them for their generosity in caring and sharing with others.

WEE NUN’S SAVINGS SCHEME will be open in the sacristy of the Church on 6th and 20th of July and will then be closed until 24th August.
