Sunday 16th August 2009

20th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Jesus said to the crowd: ‘Anyone who eats this bread will live forever’. To live forever is one of the longings in every human heart. And yet death is part of every human life. Jesus reveals though that death is not the end but only the beginning of new life and he has led the way for us through his resurrection. And he gives us his own body and blood to lead us into eternal life. Through the Eucharist we are already united with life that will last forever, a life that we are called on to live now through our love for God and for one another. Eucharistic people are meant to be people who live life to the full, people who radiate hope, people who are known for their joy and gladness in being alive, people who forgive easily and often, people who bring peace and happiness into the lives of all whom they meet.

LATIN MASS IN LONG TOWER
The series of 100 Latin Masses for the Centenary draws to a close this week.
Mornings: 6.30am – Sunday, Monday and Wednesday. Evening: Friday 7.30pm.

The “100” idea comes from Knock Shrine. In 1879 the Parish Priest of Knock offered 100 Masses for the Holy Souls. On the day of the 100th Mass something dramatic happened, the apparition! It was the 21st day of August and Our Lady, St Joseph and St John appeared at the southern gable of the church. This momentous outcome suggests that 100 Masses for the dead is something very pleasing to God. And all Masses at that time were in Latin.

Since 2009 is the centenary of the present Long Tower, the idea was conceived of offering 100 daily Latin Masses here to honour 100 years of Masses in this church. The first 50 Masses were timed to conclude on the Feast of St Columba. The second series of 50 Masses began in early July and planned so that the 100th Mass would fall on the 21st of August, the Feast of Our Lady of Knock, which is Friday of this week. Our Friday evening Mass is always offered for the dead. To honour Our Lady’s feast day and to unite with the original intention of Knock – praying for the Holy Souls – the evening Mass this Friday will be in Latin (7.30pm). All welcome.

WOULD YOU CALL YOUR SON COLUMBA?

It is a beautiful name for a baby boy. Columba means “dove” in Latin, Italian, French and some of the other Romance languages. The dove is one of the forms by which the Holy Spirit appears therefore Columba signifies peace. It is the name of the patron saint of Long Tower parish and one of three patrons of Ireland. Because he spent so much time with the Blessed Sacrament, St Columba was called “Dove of the Church”. In Irish this translates as Colmcille.

Some of the Primary Seven boys take it as their Confirmation name each year. But we would love to baptise some baby boys as Columba or Colmcille or Colm. Since 2009 is the centenary of Long Tower Church, we are asking parents to choose this as the name for their new baby boys. Many people have Columba as a second or third Christian name. This is commendable but does not do as much for the promotion of the national name or for the increase in devotion to the Saint.

If you are willing to give the name Columba as a first Christian name and use it as the daily name of the child as he grows up, your son can have life-long friendship with St Columba and protection from the Saint. In addition, since it is the 100th year of this church of St Columba we will pray in Long Tower, through the intercession of St Colmcille, for God’s eternal favour on these baby boys. In particular, at the end of 2009 we will offer a novena of Latin Masses for these babies who have been baptised Columba and called Columba during this year. Please pray about this and respond generously to this Columban call.
