Our Calling

“The harvest is great but the labourers are few.” When we look at the world we live in we mainly see problems. When Jesus looks at the same world he sees possibilities. When we think of labourers we think mainly of priests/religious. When Jesus thinks of labourers he thinks of people who live by love. And there are potentially very many of those kinds of people among us. There are wonderful people in every community who give themselves quietly in the service of others week in week out. There are many parents who work hard at handing on the gift of faith to their children. Are you among those? There are married couples who treasure their marriage as a vocation and work hard at developing their marriage as a light for the world. How do you see your vocation? What are you willing to put into it?

Fr. Johnny Doherty, C.Ss.R.

CEMETERY SUNDAY

The Annual Service of Intercession for the Dead takes place in the City Cemetery on Sunday, 22nd June at 6.00 pm.

Due to the fact that there are fewer priests available in the City, people are asked to bring their own holy water with them to the Cemetery for the blessing of the graves.

At the appropriate time the Bishop will ask a representative of each family to sprinkle their family grave (and neighbouring grave if there is no-one present). There will be no holy water in the Cemetery so please ensure that you bring your own holy water.

To facilitate this we will bless water at each Mass in Long Tower next Saturday evening and Sunday. If you would like to bring a bottle of water to be bless at mass it will ease the queue at the holy water barrel.

A PARTY for altar servers and Junior Choir members takes place on Thursday (19th June) in St Columb’s Hall from 6.00 pm to 7.30 pm. Dear children, thank you for your kindness and dedication to the Church this year. We are also very grateful to your families for their generosity and flexibility. Finally, thanks to the parents who are helping to organise the party.

MUSIC FOR SUMMER MASSES

As the choirs take a well deserved break for July and August, we would like to offer the opportunity to other singers and instrumentalists to lead the music at Sunday Masses for the next two months. Can you sing or play an instrument? If you are aged 16-18 you could allocate the Masses served towards receiving the Pope John Paul II Award (www.thepopejohnpauliiaward.com). Would you be willing to give your time and talent on a voluntary basis to enhance the liturgy this Summer or for some Sundays of the Summer? Please give your name and contact details to the Sacristy or the Parochial House.

The occasion will be marked at the 12 noon Mass on 22nd June 2008 at which Father James will be the principal celebrant. All are warmly welcome to attend. Some people may wish to give him gifts to congratulate him and thank him for his years of service. On this subject Fr Jim has made a request that all gifts be given to the Long Tower Church and directed to the restoration fund. We wish him every blessing in his priestly ministry and extend our congratulations. Ad Multos Annos!
