6th Sunday of the Year

Jesus, friend of outcasts

“Whatever you eat, whatever you drink, whatever you do at all, do it for the glory of God.” We often think of faith and religion only in terms of prayer. The extraordinary thing about Jesus and his teaching, as seen in this passage from St. Paul, is that true religion is to be found in the ordinary things of life and true faith is to be lived in daily life. This is especially true in the day-to-day loving that is marriage. Each couple live out their spirituality in the ways they tenderly love one another. And in family life the quality of love is what makes people holy. In our life together in our parish we are called to the spirituality of being a community in which we care for one another. We need prayer as part of it all both to grow in the power to love and to celebrate the goodness of love. It is only through the power of God that we can love as we should.

Fr. Johnny Doherty, C.Ss.R.

DOOR-STEP TEAM – We are establishing a team of parishioners who will take part in a focused outreach programme for the centenary. The goal is to prepare a group of twelve “disciples” who will dedicate one night a week for twelve weeks to knock on doors and invite people to come to Mass. We will have a few preparatory sessions so that you know what to say and do and then we will commission the team. Exciting! Could you offer yourself to serve God for this targeted project? If you are willing please fill in one of the volunteer forms at the door and leave it in the Sacristy. It would be important to apply for POCVA (Protection of Children and Vulnerable Adults) cover through our parish representatives. The preparatory sessions will be on Wednesday nights, 9:00-9:45pm in the Upper Room of the Sacristy. Dates: 18th February, 25th February and 4th March.

THE OPUS SECTILE IS COMING HOME.

These are the three grand panels behind the high altar – Perugino’s “Ascension of Christ” flanked by St Peter and St Paul. These magnificent works have been in Belfast under repair since November. This week we will have to erect the scaffolding once again in front of the high altar. For convenience we may be using the side altar for daily Mass. For health and safety reasons we would ask that you enter the sacristy by the outside doors, rather than passing through the sanctuary. We apologise for the disruption. The project will cost over £20,000 to complete. Thank you for your generosity in supporting such necessary repairs and for your patience as they happening. St Peter and St Paul, pray for us.

THE RESTORATION OF SOME OF THE BRASS is under way. The paschal candle stand, the processional crucifix, the processional candles and the candle extinguishers have all been repaired very thriftily. However, the gates of the baptistery badly need restored. It will cost £1500. Could you consider sponsoring this project? Any donation at all would be very welcome. Thank you.

PARISH RETREAT
Monday 23rd to Friday 27th February
LED BY ST PATRICK’S COMMUNITY from Carrick-on-Shannon

THE JUNIOR CHOIR is currently recruiting new members. The children sing at 10 o’clock Mass every Sunday. We are seeking boys and girls between the age of 8 and 16 years. It is a wonderful way of using your talents, getting musical training, learning to work as a team, making new friends, getting an annual outing and above all, serving God. If you would like to become a member of the choir we would be honoured to enrol you. Please collect a form in the sacristy and return it to the sacristy next Sunday.

THANK YOU for your help and participation in last week’s centenary preparations. The unveiling of the stations in the gallery and the torchlight procession in honour of our Lady of Lourdes were a tremendous success.
