Readings in the Parish Missal - Parish Missal pp 55 & 1006

First Reading Isaiah 42: 1-4.6-7
Here the prophet invites all to the rich banquet of life God provides for his people. In baptism we share in the life of God.

Second Reading 1 John 5:1-9
Faith in Jesus leads us to love one another and gives us the ability to overcome evil. Jesus; baptism and death bear witness to his identity.

Gospel Mark 1: 7-11
This tells us how Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist in the river Jordan and the signs that accompanied his baptism.

The Baptism of Jesus

“You are my Son, the beloved, my favour rests on you.” Those wonderful words, spoken to Jesus on the occasion of his Baptism in the Jordan, are spoken to each one of us because of our baptism into him. Just listen to God speak those words from his heart into your heart now: “you are my daughter, my son, the beloved, my favour rests on you.” Our major task is to live out that love of God in our vocation. For you as a couple committed in love, make your life together full of the joy of God’s love. Single people, religious, priests, live out the same vocation of love in different ways but for the same purpose, to fill the world with the presence and the love of God. As a community of faith, the parish is a gathering of all these vocations so that, working with one another, we can radiate that same love to all those around us.

Fr. Johnny Doherty, C.Ss.R.

RESTORATION OF THE BAPTISTERY

On Friday evening the Baptismal font was returned to its original location in the Baptistery. As part of the centenary programme we are endeavouring to restore the church to its original condition. When the new Long Tower opened in 1909 the baptistery was described as the gem of the church. It is indeed a remarkable work of architecture and art. The baptismal font itself is of the purest and rarest onyx, cut out of one solid block of that precious stone. The sculptor at the time, Mr Earley, described it as one of the finest pieces of work that he ever turned out.

In 1989, by way of making space for the facsimile of the Book of Kells which was to be donated to the Long Tower, the font was moved out of the baptistery and placed in the western transept of the church. Now, twenty years later, and 100 years after the opening of the church the font has come home. The Book of Kells is due to go into Áras Cholmcille, the new heritage centre being planned for the Wee Nuns School. We invite you to take a look at the restored baptistery. The first babies will be baptised there this Sunday morning at 11 o’clock. We are very grateful to the Restoration Group for their sterling work in this historical project.

THE CATHOLIC CHURCH IN IRELAND, NORTH AND SOUTH, WILL CELEBRATE CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK from Monday 26 January to Sunday 1 February 2009. The theme is “Catholic Schools - A Vision for Life”.
