5th Sunday of the Year

CHRIST WHO HEALS US

“The fever left her and she began to wait on them.” One of the lovely features of the Gospels is the number of healing stories they contain. Nothing is too big or too small to bring to Jesus. He raised Lazarus from the dead; he healed Peter’s mother-in-law from a fever. That same Jesus is with us and among us with the same power and the same longing, to heal us into wholeness. All we have to do is ask him for what we need for ourselves and for one another and know that he will answer. We all need his healing power in so far as we set limits to our love for one another because his great commandment is to love. Husbands and wives often need to stretch their love into forgiveness if they are to go forward together. Parents need to grow in understanding of their children. And in our parish we need Christ’s power to help us to take true responsibility for those in need.

Fr. Johnny Doherty, C.Ss.R.

CENTENARY CELEBRATIONS

Monday 9th February 2009

UNVEILING OF THE STATIONS IN THE GALLERY

When the new Long Tower opened in 1909 it had three sets of Stations of the Cross. This is extremely unusual. One set can be seen on either side of the main aisle. Another adorns the gallery front, set into the wooden surround. These are the most special since they were preserved from the old Long Tower (1812-1907), made in oak and set in mahogany. The third set belongs to the gallery itself, visible on either side of the aisle leading up to the organ. These hung on the gallery walls until the 1970s when they were removed to facilitate painting the walls. They never returned, until now. We have restored and reinstated these gallery Stations for the centenary. They will be unveiled and blessed tomorrow, Monday 9th February, after 10.00 am Mass.

THE JUNIOR CHOIR is currently recruiting new members. The children sing at 10 o’clock Mass every Sunday. We are seeking boys and girls between the age of 8 and 16 years. It is a wonderful way of using your talents, getting musical training, learning to work as a team, making new friends, getting an annual outing and above all, serving God. If you would like to become a member of the choir we would be honoured to enrol you. Please collect a form in the sacristy and return it to the sacristy next Sunday.
