Sts. Peter & Paul

Jesus put this question to his disciples: “Who do people say the Son of Man is?” That would not seem like a question that we would be able to answer today. But for us it can be translated into the question of: “where do people look for their happiness, their fulfilment, their hope?” Everyone is looking for these in their lives, some in very strange places. The second question Jesus asks is: “Who do you say I am?” And Peter answers: “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” The core of our Christian faith is that Jesus is the only one who can teach us true human living. He teaches it very clearly as the way of love. That is the only way to happiness and fulfilment and hope – the only way to the fullness of life. This has huge implications for us in marriage, the sacrament of love; in family life, the school of love; and in our faith community, the prophet of love. The practice of our faith is measured mainly by how we love God with our whole hearts and how we love one another.

Fr. Johnny Doherty, C.Ss.R.

CENTENARY CELEBRATIONS 1909-2009

For the next year in Long Tower we will celebrate the Mass or devotions on the evening of each 9th day of the month with a particular focus on St Columba. It will have a triple purpose. Firstly, we wish it to be a time of spiritual renewal for all those who are attending Mass regularly. Secondly, we intend it to be a “recruitment drive” to bring back to the Mass people who have fallen away. Thirdly, we will use the occasions to rededicate or unveil the various works of restoration.

On Wednesday we have two very special events in Long Tower.

Wednesday 9th July 2008

10:30am Unveiling of the tomb of Bishop John Keys O’Doherty
In 1907 Bishop Keys O’Doherty commissioned the building of the present Long Tower Church but died the day after the announcement. He is buried in front of the Calvary. The Restoration Committee is restoring his tomb in this, the 101st year after his death. The tomb will be unveiled and blessed after the 10 o’clock Mass on Wednesday morning. See below for a fuller article from the 1909 book.

7:30pm Mass of Anointing of the Sick
This will be a special time of prayer for healing. Those who are sick will be anointed with oil blessed during the Mass. The anointing is a Sacrament of the Church and not a simple blessing. Therefore, those eligible to receive the Sacrament should be genuinely sick in mind or body or be of old age. But we also extend a warm invitation to anyone who would simply like to receive a blessing by the priest for healing of mind or body, even if it be a minor affliction or worry. There will be Confessions available beforehand. All welcome!

MUSIC FOR SUMMER MASSES As the choirs take a well deserved break for July and August, we would like to offer the opportunity to other singers and instrumentalists to lead the music at Sunday Masses for the next two months. Can you sing or play an instrument? If you are aged 16-18 you could allocate the Masses served towards receiving the Pope John Paul II Award (www.thepopejohnpauliiaward.com). Would you be willing to give your time and talent on a voluntary basis to enhance the liturgy this Summer or for some Sundays of the Summer? Please give your name and contact details to the Sacristy or the Parochial House.

THE BINGO HAS MOVED from St Eugene’s Parish Hall to St Mary’s Parish Hall. We play every Sunday night at 8.30pm and every Tuesday night at 9.00pm in St Mary’s, Creggan. Thank you very much for your generous support. It is a valuable source of income for the parish. Please invite your friends. Newcomers welcome!

NEW NOTICE BOARDS have been erected in each of the porches of the church. In honour of St Columba’s love of the trees in his monastery the frames of the notice boards are built from oak. The inside is made of sindella board and coloured green as a reminder of the oak leaves. We hope you like the boards and find them useful.
