Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Reflection

It’s the oldest story in the book – a dispute between two brothers. Jesus didn’t see himself as a judge or referee: the only solution was a parable. Hopefully it would make this man think again.

It makes us think as well. We are here for a limited time. Life is short. If we spend our time here concentrating on earthly things and caring little about God and others, we are only fooling ourselves.

“Make yourself rich in the sight of God.”

A RIGHT FOCUS

Notice in a parish newsletter “Lost a black leather wallet containing precious family photos, personal ID documents and eight hundred and seventy five Euros in cash, finder can keep the photos and ID, but please return the cash for sentimental reasons.” It didn’t happen of course but the sentiment is closer to us than we care to admit. It is a bitter-sweet truth that we will do anything for money and precious little for God at times. We have all seen that quarrels over inheritance can provoke bitterness and enmity in the closest of families. Wisely, Jesus in today’s Gospel refuses to take sides in a case and points out what often lies at the root of a quarrel - greed for gain, the love of money. We still have to learn the wisdom of the psalm where the shortness of our life…gains us wisdom of heart.” SSIA dosh and Pension plans may offer a financial carpet for a more secure future. But what is it that assures life? It’s not abundant reserves of grain storehouses. “To be rich in the sight of God,” is to give and to share, to seek life where life is to be found. Go figure.

PRAYER FOR THE SUICIDAL

SUICIDAL? Counselling available at ZEST, 15 Queen Street, 7126 6999.

Heavenly Father, we pray for all those who are suicidal today. May your love protect and inspire them to accept the assistance they need, preventing them dying from suicide. With your gentle grace, let them know that we love them, care for them and need them.

Remind them that they are unique people, special in your eyes and in ours. Fill their minds with beautiful memories, give them all that they need to ease their pain and carry their burdens in this valley of tears. Grant them guidance and healing. Enable them to sense the Holy Spirit present in them on this pilgrim journey. Carry them when they are weary, embrace them when they are lonely and console them when they are in despair. Prompt them to come to prayer and the sacraments, so that they may be built up in faith, hope and love. Invite them into the life of grace so that having fulfilled their duty in this world they may be drawn into the eternal life of glory. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen. Our Lady of Sorrows, pray for us.
