Palm Sunday of the Lord’s Passion

My God, why have you forsaken me?

Jesus said: "I am the resurrection and the life. Do you believe this?" The central reality of our faith as Christians is that Christ has risen from the dead and that he lives among us. Holy Week is the celebration of Christ's journey into this new life; a journey that we are also invited to travel, knowing that he has gone before us, and that he travels with us. It is important to make this week a special time of prayer and reflection. This is done in the frequent gatherings in Church. But we need to take time at a family level and also at a personal level to get in touch with the most inspiring and life-giving love story ever told. Talk to each other this week about all the good things the Lord has done for you. If you are a parent, let each of your family know what she/he means to you. And take a full part in the parish Liturgy.

Fr. Johnny Doherty, C.Ss.R.

THE ENTHRONEMENT OF THE DIVINE MERCY IMAGE takes place in two weeks time, on Sunday 19th April at 3pm in Long Tower to celebrate the Feast of God’s Mercy. Saint Faustina of Poland received apparitions of Christ in the 1930s in which He asked her to have His Image painted and venerated throughout the world. Christ also revealed to her that He wished the Sunday after Easter to be the Feast of God’s Mercy – Divine Mercy Sunday.

What is so significant about the Novena and the Feast?

The Feast of Divine Mercy is like a second baptism. Jesus told St Faustina that going to Communion on Divine Mercy Sunday grants ‘complete forgiveness of sins and punishment’ (Diary, Notebook II, p. 286, par. 699, no.138) for those who have gone to Confession (even during Lent). That means that a soul who had sincerely fulfilled the requirements of the Feast of Mercy and died after receiving Communion on that Sunday would go straight to Heaven, without any time in Purgatory, regardless of past life. God is offering us the equivalent of a new baptism on Mercy Sunday every year!

In preparation for this great feast, we will pray the Novena each day at 9.30am and 7.00 pm, beginning on Good Friday. The leaflets will be available in the church. If you cannot attend each morning you might like to do the prayers at home.

A Present for Easter

The photographic print of the restored opus sectile would make an ideal present for Easter. The opus has been recently restored and the experts say it is a masterpiece, an extremely rare work of art. Pictures of these three grand panels behind the high altar – the Ascension of Christ flanked by St Peter and St Paul – are now on sale.

The restoration project is costing over £20,000. To help us fund the restoration we are selling prints. The mounted pictures are available for purchase from the Long Tower Church and the Parochial House. Cost: £19.95 or £45. Please buy one.

It can be your own memento of the 100th year of Long Tower. The proceeds go towards the cost of the repairs and the general restoration of the Long Tower.

SEALING OF PORCHES FROM RAIN – Each of the porches is taking in rain-water. The effect is that the paint is coming off and the plaster then disintegrates. There is some damage to the ceilings also, especially in the stairwells at the main door. We have made several attempts to repair the plaster over the years but the problem persists. Therefore, over the next number of weeks we will be repairing the roofs of the porches, one at a time. We apologise for the scaffolding. The western gable and copings are now complete and water-tight. Thank you for your generosity and patience.
