Reflection

The Gospel for this weekend puts before us the example of Zacchaeus, the wealthy tax collector, whose encounter with Jesus transforms his life. Climbing up a sycamore tree to catch a glimpse of Jesus as he passes, Zacchaeus finds himself being singled out by Jesus: ‘Zacchaeus, hurry down, because I must stay at your house’. In this moment the tax collector experiences the joy of a new life in Christ. But it is a joy not shared by everyone. Some bystanders grumble that Jesus is willing to stay ‘at a sinner’s house’. His retort to them is a direct challenge to the limitations we so often place on God’s universal love and his desire that all may be saved – ‘The Son of Man,’ he tells them, ‘has come to seek out and save what was lost.’

MASS BOUQUET ASSOCIATION

We are about to launch a Long Tower Mass Bouquet Association, that is, a card and weekly Mass to be offered for the LIVING. It will be suitable to give to someone who is sick or someone praying for a particular intention or as a birthday gift or indeed just for a person’s well-being.

8am Mass every Friday: The Requiem Mass Association has been in operation since 1860 and is as popular as ever. The Friday evening Mass is offered every week for its deceased members. The people enrolled in this new Association will all be living members and the 8 o’clock Mass will be offered for them every Friday morning. As with the Mass for the dead, the Mass for the living will be offered for one year for ALL those who have been enrolled and NO particular names will be read out. This means that the 8am Mass on Fridays will not be available for any other intentions, such as anniversaries.

Cost: Like the Requiem Mass Association, the cost will be £2 for the card and the twelve month enrolment. The cards will be available from the Sacristy and the Parochial House. We hope it will be a major source of income for the renovation fund in the parish.

Launch: We plan to launch the Mass Bouquet Association NEXT Sunday, 11th November, the feast of St Martin of Tours. St Columba chose St Martin as one of his patrons and there is a shrine to St Martin in St Patrick’s aisle of Long Tower Church.

Thanks: Our sincere gratitude goes to Eugene Quigley and the Restoration Committee for putting such dedicated work into producing the lovely card. We hope you like it and avail of it as a new Long Tower initiative in preparation for the centenary of the church in 2009.

You are Invited to Our Novena to Our Lady of Perpetual Succour In St Columba’s Church, Long Tower
