Sunday 4th May 2008

The Ascension of the Lord

“Know that I am with you always; yes, to the end of time”. This promise that Jesus gave his disciples, as he was leaving them at the Ascension, is a wonderful truth for us today. It is a promise that is fulfilled in so many ways. He is with us every time we are together because he said that where two or three of us are gathered together we make him present. This has great implications for our homes and families. The love of husband and wife makes Christ present. The love of parents and children makes Christ present. And every gathering we are part of in our parish makes Christ present. That is the meaning of being a parish – a community of people who make Christ present for the world around them so that he can be Saviour for that world. We are powerfully reminded of this real presence of Christ through the Blessed Sacrament present in our community. This week we renew our faith in this mystery.

Fr. Johnny Doherty, C.Ss.R.

‘Behold, I am with you always…’ Jesus gathers his disciples to send them forth one last time to ‘make disciples of all nations’ – assuring then he would be with them always. This is a message for us as well. Jesus is going away but still staying with us. Jesus, in his‘going up,’ may seem to us earthlings as untouchable. But it is through us that he becomes visible and tangible ‘down here’ in our earthly home. We must not to leave Jesus up in the sky but are called ‘to bring him down,’ our mission being to make him present.

There is, however, an invisible quality if we keep on looking up, if we don’t sharpen our vision. All beings, human and nonhuman, are filled with life, light, and love, the glory of God. But we humans are the only species with a heart that can know and love God. We are indeed Jesus’ hands, his feet, his heart. What tremendous challenge in our following Jesus – knowing we are his compassionate, healing, loving presence here below. He is indeed with us always. In my life, do I bring Jesus down among us, here and now, so that he is indeed with us always?
