Reflection - Humility

We are all familiar with the Gospel passage which encourages the practice of humility. Humility is an attempt to try and see ourselves as God sees us. It’s taking an honest measure of ourselves without being boastful, pompous or proud, realizing that we are what we are before God and nothing more. It is an admission that our talents come from God who has seen fit to work through us. We are conditioned to view our gifts as if they are our own, without realizing that they are to be used for the good of the community. The truth is that we are all vessels of clay and have much to be modest about. Our lives have meaning only when we are sincere in relation to God. We need to practice humility if we are to be true to ourselves and God. ‘The greater you are, the more you should behave humbly’. (First Reading)

BRANDYWELL GROTTO APPEAL
The Brandywell is famous for its links with football. However the famous stadium is just one of the well known landmarks in the area.

The Grotto will be a familiar sight to anyone who has ever visited the area. Over 60 years after it was built to protect the community from German bombers, local residents are appealing for donations to carry out long overdue repair work. The statues have already been restored and were unveiled at the annual open air Mass on Tuesday 14th August. The Rosary is held every night of the year at 7pm at the Grotto and everyone is welcome to attend.

Donations to the fund can be made at the Bank of Ireland by asking for the Brandywell Grotto Repair Fund.

ST VINCENT DE PAUL will donate their entire weekend collection on the 22nd/23rd September to the registered charity ‘Action with Effect’ in support of the building of a hospice for the terminally ill and lepers in India. Please support this worthy charity.

NEW RELIGIOUS ORDER IN DERRY
Sisters of Saint John the Evangelist

Bishop Hegarty has welcomed a new Religious Order to the Diocese of Derry: the Contemplative Sisters of St. John the Evangelist. The first three Sisters arrived here on 24th August, from their mother house in St. Jodard, near Lyon in France. The Sisters have set up their temporary pre-foundation house in Belvoir Park, Culmore. They intend to build a new convent.

The Sisters are contemplative: they do not work in the community such as in school or parish ministry; rather, their lives are dedicated to intense prayer. Given their new house in Derry, they will be a prayerful presence in the diocese, praying for all the people of Derry. Although contemplative, the Sisters are not enclosed – in other words, they may be seen out and about in the city. They are distinctive in their long grey habits and white veils. The Order was established twenty five years ago, and most Sisters are under thirty years of age. The Superior is Sister Mary Magdalene. See www.stjean.com for information on their life and Order or contact the Sisters directly at 10 Belvoir Park.
