Christ our security

Jesus said: ‘the person who does the will of my Father in heaven will enter the kingdom of heaven.’ In the Church we have done a great disservice to the whole idea of the will of God. We so often identify it with the things that go wrong – like someone dying, or getting ill, or losing their job etc. We hardly ever think of success and health and well-being as the will of God. In the Scripture we come to know that the will of God is about all that is good and best for our lives and our loves. And we have a great responsibility to bring all that is best to one another in God’s name. So, we can say that it is God’s will that we comfort one another in bereavement; that we support one another in sickness; that we help one another in adversity etc. It is when we are like this in our homes and our community that we enter the kingdom of God.

Fr. Johnny Doherty, C.Ss.R.

THE ANNUAL CORPUS CHRISTI PROCESSION will take place from the Grotto in the Brandywell today, Sunday at 5.00 pm to celebrate the opening of the Novena to St Columba. The Angelus and Exposition will be followed by the procession with the Blessed Sacrament from the Grotto to Long Tower Church. The ceremony will conclude with Benediction in the church. All welcome! We especially invite the P4 children who are making their First Holy Communion to dress up and walk with the Blessed Sacrament.

ST COLUMBA’S DAY – Monday 9th June

Bishop Daly will be the principle celebrant at the 9th June Mass at 7.30 pm. The traditional blessing of St Columba’s Well will immediately follow Mass. We invite our parishioners, people from throughout the City and friends of the Long Tower to be with us to celebrate the Feast of our Patron. The Novena is being recited at all Masses this week.

7.00 pm Rosary in Irish at the Calvary
7.30 pm Mass celebrated by Bishop Daly and priests of the parish
8.40 pm Procession and Blessing of St Columba’s Well

THE NOVENA TO ST COLUMBA begins today, Sunday (1st June). The prayer will be recited at all Masses until the feast-day (Monday 9th June).

ST COLUMB’S WELL has been looked after for half a century by the Mitchell Family. The parish and community are indeed indebted to them for the care, dedication and devotion they have shown to St Columba and to his Well. We are also grateful to the new custodian of the Well, Mr Don Doherty. We wish him many graces and blessings as he begins this noble endeavour.

DEATHS

We wish to express our deepest sympathy to the relatives and friends of

Winnie Hutton, 33 Hatmore Park.

May she rest in peace.

Week ending 01/06/2008

BAPTISMS We welcome: Damian James O’Neill, Switzerland, who was baptised recently.

P7 PLEDGE The children from Long Tower PS who made their Confirmation recently will take their pledge (until 18) against alcohol at the 6.00 Vigil Mass next Saturday (7th June). We live in an age when the gift of alcohol is abused and causes immense damage to homes, families and society in general. Therefore the parents, sponsors and families are also invited to this Mass to give special encouragement to the children. By our own example of abstinence or of consuming alcohol in moderation we can help the children to keep the promises that they make to God. May God who has begun the good work in them bring it to fulfilment.

CHILD PROTECTION IN THE PARISH

The safe-guarding of children is at the very heart of the Church’s activity. The relationship between Jesus and children was one which valued them and nurtured them. The example of Jesus is, of course, always our standard.

In our parish many people work together to safe-guard children taking part in Church activities. Your Parish Representatives for Child Protection are key to this. Along with all who work with children in the parish community, best practice in child-safeguarding is our goal.

As part of best practice, it is important that each parish fulfil the POCVA requirements of civil law in Northern Ireland. This is the vetting process for all who work with children, whether as employees of the parish or as volunteers. I would ask everyone to cooperate in vetting, both those who are new recruits to parish activities with children, and those who have generously done so for many years. Child safe-guarding is part of our Christian calling.

I thank all of you, who are engaged with children in this parish, for the wonderful work you do, building up the Kingdom of God among the next generation of young Catholics.
Bishop Séamus Hegarty
